Acer drops to No. 3 mobile PC maker in Q4

Taiwan's Acer dropped to third place among mobile PC makers globally in the fourth quarter of 2010, while Apple surged to the top spot thanks to strong sales of its popular iPad, a research firm said Sunday.

Acer's global market share slid to 14 percent in the fourth quarter of last year from 16.5 percent in the previous quarter, which pushed the company into third place behind Apple and Hewlett-Packard, with 17. 2 percent and 15.6 percent market shares, respectively, according to a report released by DisplaySearch.

Dell and Toshiba remained in fourth and the fifth places in the rankings, respectively, posting 9.9 percent and 8.6 percent market shares.

Acer's mobile PC shipments, including components from its Chinese alliance, Founder Technology Group Corp., decreased to 8.4 million units in the fourth quarter of 2010 from 9.1 million units in the third quarter, the report said.

The top player, Apple, shipped 10.2 million mobile PCs in the fourth quarter compared with 6.3 million units in the July-September period of 2010, when it took the No. 3 position with a 12.4 percent market share.

"While we anticipate increased competition in the tablet PC market later this year with the introduction of Android Honeycomb-based tablets, Apple's iPad business is complementing a notebook line whose shipments widely exceed the industry average growth rate," said Richard Shim, senior analyst at DisplaySearch.

In the fourth quarter of 2010, worldwide mobile PC shipments -- including notebooks and tablet PCs -- reached 59.6 million units, up 8 percent from the third quarter and 17 percent from a year ago. It was the highest volume since DisplaySearch first began to track the segment in 1999.

However, notebook computer shipments in the fourth quarter, excluding tablets, increased only 4 percent from the previous quarter and recorded a year-on-year growth of just 1 percent.
