Huawei Launches Wi-Fi Data Card E355 In India at Rs 5499/-

Vodafone, Airtel, Idea in pact to offer pan-India 3G services


Vodafone India has announced that it has signed agreements with Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular Ltd. for sharing of 3G services in regions where they do not have the bandwidth licenses.

The  agreement also covers areas where Vodafone-Essar has 3G bandwidth which will help the company provide 3G services through out the country.

As of now Vodafone has 3G permissions for nine telecom sectors out of the twenty two. Previously, Vodafone won the bandwidth for Rs 116.18 billion in the 3G auctions last year.  

Airtel currently operates 3G services in thirteen regions and Idea operates 3G services in eleven regions. This sharing agreement will bring all the three major players on an even keel, in terms of 3G service coverage.

Service providers have been trying to 3G attract customers, but the combination of high 3G charges and poor coverage have proven to be huge disadvantages. This agreement may go long way in rectifying coverage issues.

Reliance launches commercial 3G services in Himachal Pradesh

Reliance Communications today announced the launch of Reliance 3G services in Himachal Pradesh’s all major towns,company officials said.
“The service will be offered in Shimla, Solan, Baddi, Nalagarh, Mandi, Poanta Sahib, Dharamsala, Kullu, Palampur, Hamirpur, Dalhousie, Una and Kangra,” said Sami Butt Circle head RCOM here.
“Very soon 3 G will be available in Manali and Sundernagar,” he said.
“Reliance 3G is now available in all 13 circles of the country and in nearly 150 towns of Himachal.The launch of 3G is an integral part of our vision 2015 of creating a ‘wireless Himachal’ built on the ‘affordable 3G for all platform’,” said Butt.
The service is capable of offering peak speeds of 28 mbps. It includes video calling,mobile tv,video streaming and applications accessed by a variety of mobile and PCs.
RCOM has tied up with Nokia for devices,Facebook,Nokia and Ericsson for applications and Universal music for content and motricity for the web portal.
A fortnight ago Idea Cellular also rolled out its 3G services in the hill state.

One million homes get 100Mbps broadband, from Virgin


A million homes can now get 100Mbps broadband via Virgin Media's cable network, the company said on Wednesday.
This leaves 26 million to go. Jon James, executive director of broadband at Virgin Media said: "We had more then 10,000 registrations on the first day we unveiled 100Mbps, so there is real desire for better broadband."
Jon James said VM would finish its 100Mbps roll-out in mid-2012. By then, half the country would have access to it. "That'll be six years ahead of EU targets," he said.
Neelie Kroes, the European Digital Agenda boss, has called for all citizens to have access to a minimum 30Mbps, and for half to have access to 100Mbps by 2020.
James said VM's 100Mbps service also provides 10Mb upload speeds for £35 a month when bundled with other communications products, or £45 per month when bought as a stand-alone product.
He said VM's network now carries over half a terabit of data per second during busy periods. At that rate, one could download 62 copies of the entire Encyclopedia Britannica every second, he said.

MTS aims to triple customer base by 2013

Russian oil-to-telecoms group Sistema's Indian mobile unit,Sistema Shyam Teleservices, which promotes the MTS mobile service brand, expects to triple its customer base and aims to be EBITDA positive by 2013, its chief executive said.
The company sees 30 million customers by 2013 from 10 million currently, Vsevolod Rozanov, chief executive of Sistema Shyam TeleServices said on Tuesday.
IPO plans to be ready in a couple of months
Vsevolod Rozanov also said the firm would finalise in the next couple of months the investment banks that would manage its planned initial public offering (IPO), although the timing of the issue was not yet decided.
"As we have said, we will be ready (for IPO) by the end of this calendar year," Rozanov said, but added the timing of a listing would depend on improvement in regulatory environment and on market conditions.
India is the world's fastest-growing mobile market by customer additions and its 771 million mobile subscribers make it the second-biggest mobile market after China, but carriers operate under wafer-thin margin amid fierce competition in a crowded 15-player market where mobile voice business dominates.
Aims bigger share in India's mobile data market
Sistema Shyam is focusing on gaining a bigger share of India's fledgling but growingmobile data market where there is less competition.
The once-booming telecoms sector has also been hit by a scandal over grant of licences and radio airwaves in 2007/08, which a state auditor said could have cost the government up to $39 billion in revenue. Several telecoms carriers face risk of losing their permits as a probe into the alleged scam is on.
Sistema Shyam is not involved in the licensing scam, but is among companies that have been named by the sector regulator to not have met network rollout requirements. The regulator has recommended to the government to cancel dozens of licences, including 11 held by Sistema Shyam over rollout.
The government this month issued notices Etisalat's Indian mobile venture and Idea Cellular to defend their licences for not meeting the rollout requirements.
“Company didn't get 'show cause' notice from govt”
But Rozanov said they had not received any of the so-called "show cause" notice. He said the company had launched commercial services in 18 of India's 22 zones and will launch operations in the remaining zones in the next two to three months.
Sistema entered India in late 2008 by picking a controlling stake in a small Indian mobile firm, which has been since renamed as Sistema Shyam TeleServices.
Sistema owns a 73.7 per cent stake in Sistema Shyam, while India's Shyam group owns 23.8 per cent and the remainder is held by minority shareholders.
The Russian government in December paid $600 million for a stake of about 17 per cent of Sistema Shyam. Rozanov said he expected the Russian investment deal to be closed in next few weeks, which would dilute Sistema's holding in the company.

Vodafone launches mobile wi-fi device


Telecom service provider Vodafone Essar Monday launched its mobile wi-fi device – Vodafone R201 – in India, which can be used by five users simultaneously to connect to Vodafone’s 3G network.
The device contains a sim slot to connect to the 3G network and five users can then connect their computers, mobile gaming devices, digital music players to the device over wi-fi to enjoy 3G speeds, the company claimed.
“The Vodafone R201 is designed to provide customers with an advantage of connecting and communicating on-the-go,” said Kumar Ramanathan, chief marketing officer of Vodafone Essar.
The device has a battery life of up to four hours and allows users to enjoy uninterrupted 3G internet services at a speed of up to 7.2 mbps on high-speed downlink packet access enabled devices.
Priced at Rs.5,500, this device is powered by battery, mains or USB along with plug and plays software of 128 MB flash memory, the company said.

India to have 400million 3G connection by 2015


The number of third generation (3G) subscribers in India will reach 400 million by 2015 as the telecom operators ramp-up rollout of the high-end mobile telephony service, said a Wireless Intelligence study.

"India's 3G connections are set to grow three-fold between 2011 and 2015 as operators ramp-up rollout of new 3G networks," said the study titled "India 3G rollout".

According to the report, the telecom operators are likely to invest $2.5 billion in building the new networks and rolling out 3G services in 2011.

"Indian operators spent a combined $15 billion in acquiring Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) 3G spectrum at auction last year and are forecast to jointly invest a further $2.5 billion in building the new networks and rolling out 3G services in 2011," it added.

The study notes that over 80 percent of 3G connections will be based on WCDMA in five years, with the remaining 20 percent on CDMA-based 3G networks.

However, 2011 has already seen a succession of rival launches, including Bharti (in January), Aircel (February) and Vodafone (March) and it forecasts that all new WCDMA-based operators will have launched services by June 2011.

Telecom giant Bharti Airtel is expected to command the largest 3G share with 18 percent followed by Reliance Communications and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd with 15 percent and 13 percent respectively.

"Competition in the Indian 3G space is likely to be intense as most operators have set ambitious targets," said Joss Gillet, senior analyst at Wireless Intelligence.

"Market share growth clearly depends on how fast operators can deploy 3G networks in their respective licensed areas, and how rapidly they can address demand in rural areas," he added.

Even though initial 3G rollouts are concentrated in the metro areas including cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata they will soon be outstripped by fast-growing demand for 3G in more populous regions such as Punjab, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Haryana.

But the situation is complicated as no 3G operator is able to offer a nationwide service, which will require network sharing and roaming between operators. Pricing 3G services appropriately in a market where around 200 million prospective users live on less than $2 a day is also a major challenge.

"Indian operators are betting on 3G services to stabilise ARPU (average revenue per user) and increase non-voice revenues to around the 30 percent mark in the coming years," added Gillet.

"Even though we do not anticipate a price war in the 3G space, profitability will take time due to the high investments required and the current need for additional spectrum."

Cheap, ultrafast broadband? Hong Kong has it


Hong Kong residents can enjoy astoundingly fast broadband at an astoundingly low price. It became available last year, when a scrappy company called Hong Kong Broadband Network introduced a new option for its fiber-to-the-home service: a speed of 1,000 megabits a second – known as a “gig” – for less than $26 a month.

In the United States, we don’t have anything close to that. But we could. And we should.

Verizon, the nation’s leading provider of fiber-to-the-home service, doesn’t offer a gig, or even half that speed. Instead, it markets a “fastest” service that is only 50 megabits a second for downloading and 20 megabits a second for uploading. It costs $144.99 a month. That’s one-twentieth the speed of Hong Kong Broadband’s service for downloading, for more than five times the price.

One thing working in Hong Kong’s favor, of course, is its greater population density, enabling broadband companies to reach multiuser dwellings at a much lower cost. But density is only part of the explanation. The personality of Hong Kong Broadband should be noted, too. A wholly owned subsidiary of City Telecom , it is an aggressive newcomer. It was willing to sustain seven years of losses while building out its fiber network before it turned profitable.

Hong Kong Broadband’s principal competitor is an older company, PCCW, which has several other lines of business, including phone, television and mobile. PCCW also offers gigabit service to the home and benefits from the same population density. But PCCW’s price is more than twice as much as Hong Kong Broadband’s. Despite its low prices, Hong Kong Broadband now operates in the black.

Inexpensive pricing of gigabit broadband is practical in U.S. cities, too.

“This is an eminently replicable model,” says Benoit Felten, a co-founder of Diffraction Analysis, a consulting business based in Paris. “But not by someone who already owns a network – unless they’re willing to scrap the network.”

In the United States, costs would come down if several companies shared the financial burden of putting fiber into the ground and then competed on the basis of services built on top of the shared assets. That would bring multiple competitors into the picture, pushing down prices. But it would also require regulatory changes that the Federal Communications Commission has yet to show an appetite for. Dane Jasper, the chief executive of Sonic.net, an Internet provider based in Santa Rosa, Calif., says that most broadband markets in the United States today are dominated by one phone company and one cable company.
