PC shipments in India grow by 30%: IDC

India's PC shipments for the second quarter in 2013 saw a 24% increase over Q2 2012 and a quarter-on-quarter surge of about 30.2 % over Q1 2013, according to the latest IDC report. In terms of vendor share, HP registered highest ever market share with 34.1% share in the quarter. Dell stood second with 11% share, while Acer grabbed the third position with 10.4%.
According to the IDC experts, the growth was driven by the ongoing special projects run by the state governments in the UP, Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu, which accounted for roughly one third of the total PC market.
According to the experts, Dell's presence at the entry-level price-band helped them gain the second spot. Acer, on the other hand, continued to thrive in government and education projects spread across the country. IDC says Acer bagged large deals in the states of Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan, which pushed their growth in the commercial PC market in Q2.
Experts noted that the organic demands for PCs in the country outside special projects has dropped, raising a serious concern for PC Vendors. The rupee slide has also negative impact on the segment.
“...the rupee slide derailed enterprise spending, as the investment decisions remained seemingly delayed across most of the verticals,” says Kiran Kumar, Research Manager at IDC.
"Though the enterprise PC business was primarily driven by the single largest notebook deal in the state of Uttar Pradesh, the vendor also led the consumer PC business in India with their well established channel network and incentive programs tied with their effective pricing strategies," added Kiran.
According to Manish Yadav, Market Analyst, "Q2 had a sluggish start in April owing to inventory concerns coupled with shift in share of wallet towards commodities like gold and other consumer devices that were riding high on trade-back schemes and other time-to-time discount offers. Further, the announcement of new tax policies, such as the Local Body Tax in Mumbai and suburban areas, halted shipment growth in May. But June largely reversed this stillness aided by back-to-school campaigns and loading of stocks across partners in preparation to the impending price hike on account of rupee volatility."

Xerox-HCL Deal raises issue

A lot of Xerox Corp. equipment is made for the company by Singapore electronics manufacturer Flextronics International.

Fuji Xerox, which is Xerox's partnership with FujiFilm Holdings Corp., also produces equipment as well as technology.
And now HCL Technologies Ltd. of India will handle a sizable piece of research-and-development work previously done by Xerox engineers.

The five-year deal inked a week ago with HCL has Xerox expecting improved R&D and leaves hundreds of affected workers wondering what happens next to their jobs. Under the arrangement, HCL takes over some of Xerox's technology engineering duties, and 600 Xerox engineers in North America and western Europe — including 250 in the Rochester area — are to become employees of HCL.
For Xerox, the deal is all about expanding its engineering capabilities, said Willem Appelo, president of the company's Global Business and Services Group, pointing to HCL's 15,000 engineers.
While Xerox said cost savings weren't a prime motivator, "offshoring and outsourcing is becoming the watchword of the day" as companies cut costs to compete, said Rudy Hirschheim, a professor at Louisiana State University's Ourso College of Business.
HCL has offices in 26 nations, posted sales of $2.7 billion in its most recent fiscal year, and employs about 73,000 people globally doing information technology work, business process outsourcing, and software and systems engineering.
Six thousand of those employees are in the United States, and 2,300 of those 6,000 are Americans, said HCL spokeswoman Avena Suri.

HCL said it's typical for the compensation of employees it absorbs from client companies such as Xerox to remain close to what it had been. Still, experts say the fates of such workers are iffy.
Outsourcing companies, whether overseas like HCL or U.S.-based like Electronic Data Systems, make their money by having cheaper labor costs and greater efficiency than the companies that hire them, said Mary Lacity, University of Missouri professor of information systems.

India semicon market to touch $9.86 bn by 2012

India Semiconductor Association (ISA) and Frost & Sullivan said on Wednesday that the semiconductor market in India has grown beyond the industry expectations.
In its latest report unveiled here, the trade body, together with the research firm, said that the market grew by 28.3 per cent in 2010, and projects it to be $9.86 billion by 2012.
Pradip K Dutta, chairman, ISA, said there is a lot of growth happening in semiconductor space and they are working closely with the department of information technology (DIT).
“Local manufacturing of telecom equipment is one of the growth drivers for semiconductor industry,” he said. Dutta also said that the industry should look at domestic manufacturing.

Intel introduces new technology in mobile push

Intel Corp introduced a manufacturing process that crams more transistors onto silicon chips, a technology that will help it catch up in the red-hot tablet and smartphone market, the chipmaker said on Wednesday.

Intel expects to start production of its first PC and server chips using new technology -- code named Ivy Bridge -- by the end of 2011 and that it would also make new processors for mobile devices.

Wall Street investors had expected the world's largest chip maker to take the wraps off its latest cutting-edge technology, posing a potential threat to rival ARM Holdings. Shares in Intel climbed more than 1 percent while ARM's shares closed down 7.3 percent at 5.58 pounds in London.

Santa Clara, California-based Intel's processors are the brains in 80 percent of the world's personal computers but the world's biggest chipmaker has failed to get into gadgets like Apple's iPad.

Energy-efficient chips licensed by ARM Holdings that conserve smartphone batteries are favored by Apple and its competitors, and are quickly becoming an industry standard on mobile devices at the expense of Intel.

Intel said its new 22 nanometer (nm) chips would offer higher performance -- lower line-wdiths mean more transistors and faster speeds -- and consume less electricity than its current 32 nm chips.

To extend its lead in manufacturing technology and help it catch up in the mobile race, Intel last month raised its capital spending plan for 2011 to $10.2 billion from $9 billion as it rushes to implement its 22 nm manufacturing as well as its next goal -- 14 nm.

Intel's cutting-edge manufacturing technology is far ahead of other chip companies, giving it a major advantage in building fast and efficient processors.

Since the 1960s, Intel and other semiconductor companies have sunk billions of dollars into research and development letting them double the number of transistors they can squeeze onto microchips every two years, paving the way for smaller and faster electronics gadgets.

But the costs of developing and building ever more advanced manufacturing technology is snowballing and has become prohibitively expensive for many players.

Apple May Become The First $1 Trillion Company

From a near death experience, to a company that has gone on to become the most valuable technology company. Surpassing Microsoft in terms of market cap last year, Cupertino-based Apple also recently became more profitable than MS. One wonders, what is next?

According to the managing partner of Formula Capital James Altucher, Apple may become the first trillion dollar company in history; in fact, it might already be a $2 - $3 trillion company. Demand for Apple products - particularly the iPhone and iPad have consistently increased over the years. We can safely say that with the next iterations, as in iPhone 5 and iPad 3, the demand is only going to skyrocket.

Even in the absence of Jobs, COO Tim Cook is doing a good job at handling the day to day operations and taking strategic decisions for the company. The company is in safe hands even without its founder. However, before Apple officially reaches the landmark of $1 trillion, it will have to surpass Exxon Mobil, currently the most valuable company on the planet.

Toshiba unveils 14-inch USB-powered portable display

If you’re anything like me then working with a single display on your PC is not the ideal scenario. Ever since adding a second display to my setup I haven’t looked back and my productivity has improved (I’m even considering a third display now I have a free DisplyPort connection on my graphics card).
When using a laptop you are a lot more limited. A second display needs power, is difficult to stay mobile while carrying, and your choices are limited as most displays ship with a stand and aren’t meant to be moved often. Lenovo has attempted to solve this problem by adding a second display to the ThinkPad W700, but it’s small and pushes the price of the laptop right up.
Toshiba does have a new solution though, that it has just unveiled. It’s called the Toshiba USB Mobile LCD Monitor and offers up a portable 14″ screen with a HD resolution of 1366 x 768.

While that sounds great, how have they made it portable? Somehow Toshiba has managed to reduce the power required by the display to the point where a USB connection supplies all it needs as well as the video signal. What that means is you have a second display that only requires a USB cable plugged into your laptop to work.
When not in use the screen folds down flat into a protective leather casing and is only around half an inch thick so that it can easily be slotted next to your laptop in a bag. In terms of weight it’s 3 pounds extra on your shoulder. Options on the display include the ability to make it sleep as well as a brightness selector to save even more power depending on lighting conditions.
The Mobile LCD will work with any laptop running Windows and is already available to purchase from ToshibaDirect.com for $199.99

LinkedIn Reaches 100M Users

LinkedIn Logo
Professional social-networking site LinkedIn has reached a milestone: the site now has more than 100 million users.
To put that number in perspective, it's half of the number of registered accounts on Twitter and a fifth of Facebook's population.
Launched in 2003, LinkedIn says it's now used in more than 200 countries. In fact, more than half of its user base comes from outside the U.S. According to a blog post, 44 million users come from the states, while 56 million come from other countries. The service is expanding the fastest in Brazil, where it grew by 428 percent in the last year. Mexico has the second-highest growth rate, where the service grew by 178 percent.
eBay, Amazon, Apple, and Cisco are among some of the companies most represented on the networking site, based on the percentage of employees with active LinkedIn accounts, the blog post says. The service industry is one of the most common sectors on the site, comprising 20 percent of accounts. Finance and high tech both have a strong presence on LinkedIn; each of these industries make up nine percent of profiles on the site.
It's been a big year for LinkedIn. The company filed for IPO in January. Information like the number of shares that will be offered and the price range for the offering has not yet been disclosed. However, the filing revealed that for the nine months ending Sept. 30, 2010 (the most recent data) LinkedIn was profitable, with a net income of $10.0 million on revenue of $161.4 million.
Although more information about the IPO hasn't been revealed yet, one thing is certain: LinkedIn is growing steadily. At the end of 2009, the site had 55 million users. By the close of 2010, LinkedIn reported 90 million users, and that number has already increased by 10 million.

India: Lenovo No.1 in enterprise PCs

In the last quarter of 2010, Lenovo for the first time ever became the No. 1 PC supplier to enterprises in India. It's a position that has been occupied by Dell for some time. HP, HCL and Acer too are very strong in the segment, with their quarterly marketshares often being just marginally behind the leader.

But if there is one striking feature in the enterprise space over the past two years, it is Lenovo's rise. The company had a 5.7% share of this space in the first quarter of 2009, but over the past two quarters, it has been over 20%, according to estimates by research firm IDC. In Q4 of 2010, it touched 21.8%, against Dell's 19.2%.

These high figures may not sustain, considering that they reflect a significant increase in spending on IT infrastructure by very large enterprises or VLE (those over 1,000 employees), following the equally sharp decline in spending by them during the recession. Lenovo has been traditionally strong in the VLE space. But it is fair to say that the company is now well entrenched in the top 5.

Rahul Agarwal, executive director for Lenovo India's key accounts business, says more and more companies are recognizing the value of its premium products. "Earlier, most of our business was coming from existing customers.

But now, the proportion of business from new customers is increasing," he says. According to him, Lenovo India had about 25 new customers in Q1 of 2010, but this rose to about 75 in the last quarter.

Lenovo's ThinkPad range of laptops comes with powerful features that are extremely attractive to those that can afford them. These include features that make them almost immune to falls, crashes and coffee spills; they are also amongst the coolest and quietest.

But these very qualities and the premium pricing make them less attractive to other segments in the enterprise categorization --- large enterprises (those with employees between 500 and 1,000), and governmental and educational institutions. HCL has been strong in the government segment and Acer in education.

Agarwal says even these segments will slowly move to more premium products, and that's what Lenovo hopes to cash on.

Lenovo, based in China, is China's biggest PC player, and the world's fourth largest, after HP, Dell and Acer.

HP expands energy and carbon monitoring services

Hewlett-Packard on Thursday announced a new portfolio of services to determine and implement ways to cut energy costs and carbon emissions across organizations.
HP's Energy and Sustainability Management (ESM) program will include services to monitor and report energy usage and carbon emissions in buildings, data centers and supply chains, said Ken Hamilton, director of global energy and sustainability services at HP's Technology Consulting group. The services will also include determination of financial models to balance business operations with energy use and sustainability.
"Organizations are investing in point-specific opportunities," Hamilton said. For example, companies are spending on specific cooling techniques in data centers, but HP wants companies to think across the board to include building facilities and the supply chain. Such an expansion could help build a more accurate business model to cut energy costs and mitigate emissions.
The services include an audit of materials, parts, water and waste management. The program also offers specific monitoring and reporting services through tools such as analytics software for water usage, energy efficiency and carbon emissions.
The services could be useful for companies looking to squeeze more savings out of existing business operations, said Michael Kanellos, senior analyst at Greentech Media.
"Energy and natural resources are going up in price," Kanellos said. "It could be a larger share of the operating expenses."
There is a growing interest in evaluating and applying geothermal energy alternatives into business operations, Hamilton said. The services could help a company choose options for renewable energy sources based on requirements driven by either regulatory or company policy. HP then helps evaluate costs, benefits and operational factors of the options and provides recommendations, Hamilton said.
The usefulness of HP's services varies, Greentech's Kanellos said. For example, retailers may look to cut costs and be environmentally friendly by reducing packaging material like Styrofoam, which may not be in line with HP's expertise.
HP could however provide its distribution, data center and operations expertise to companies. Many data centers in New York City are being told that they can't get more energy because of power caps, Kanellos said. To stick within power limits, companies are virtualizing more applications or switching to power-efficient air conditioners and cooling systems. HP's services could help companies tweak operations to stay within specific power caps, Kanellos said.
HP already provides services related to the design, planning and construction of data centers. The company also sells services associated with the operation of data centers and buildings, including mechanical, electrical, and heating and cooling designs.
But the company wants to move from the data center further up the enterprise, Hamilton said. As the world's largest PC maker, HP has a strong supply chain, and it is taking that expertise to help companies reduce energy costs associated with shipping, sourcing of material and manufacturing. The company is also extending its internal engineering and research resources to provide monitoring and reporting tools.

Toshiba India doubles growth rate in 2010

Toshiba India is very happy at their growth rate in India, sources informed. The firm grew at above 100% in the last fiscal, sources added.

According to sources, Toshiba is optimistic about its growth in 2011 too, as they doubled their revenue.

The reason for Toshiba’s success came after quarter one in 2010 when it reviewed and upgraded its laptops on the basis of feedbacks from channel partners. In fact Toshiba sold some advanced models of laptops in India which they had not even talked of in the developed countries.

Research shows that Toshiba sold 65,000 notebook units and acquired 7.5 share of the entire market across India. In addition it did some aggressive marketing last year investing more than $10 million for building a brand name for Toshiba in the Indian sub-continent.

Toshiba now has plans to expand its exclusive stores across India and it aims to become one of the top three brands in the sub continent.
