Apple iPhone 4 launched in India

Apple's iPhone 4 hit store shelves in India on Friday, nearly a year after the next-generation version of the popular smartphone was rolled out worldwide.
Mobile phone carrier Aircel launched the iPhone 4 with a new pricing model, allowing customers to recover the upfront cost of the smartphone on select plans over 24 months, the company said in a press release.
Aircel will charge 34,500 rupees for iPhones with a 16 GB capacity and 40,900 rupees for the 32 GB model, it said.
Bharti Airtel, India's top mobile phone carrier, also launched the phone.
The iPhone 4 boasts a higher-quality screen and longer battery life than the previous model.
With more than 800 million mobile subscribers, India is the world's second-biggest market for mobile phone services and is also the fastest-growing. But smartphones are estimated to account for just over 5 percent of the mobile handset sales.
Indian carriers have recently started rolling out high-speed third-generation (3G) mobile networks, which is expected to boost sales of smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy S II to Launch In India On June 3

The Samsung Galaxy S II has managed to blow us all away by its sheer brilliance and hardware capabilities. We got our first glimpse of the device during the Mobile World Congress in February. It has been touted as one of the best Android smartphones in the market; needless to say expectations were generally high. And now this beast of a handset is India-bound, courtesy of Vodafone. The handset will be launched via Vodafone on June 3.  Vodafone will sell the handset for Rs.32,890 which isn't much considering that the entry-level iPhone 4 to be launched in India will cost about Rs.2000 more.Interested buyers may also pre-order their phones via Samsung's website from May 26 onwards for Rs.1000. It seems like Vodafone customers will have the privilege of getting the device first, followed by other Samsung retail outlets in India where the device will be available from June 9. Vodafone users will also be offered 6 GB of free data usage (1 GB per month for a span of 6 months).

This handset is the successor to the equally popular Samsung Galaxy S, which sold around 10 million units worldwide. Something similar can be expected from the Galaxy S II, and with the device that the Galaxy S II is, we don't think that should be too difficult. The Indian markets will be getting the 16 GB variant of the Galaxy S II.

Specifications:
The Galaxy S II will feature a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, an 8 Megapixel camera capable of recording 1080p Full HD video, a 1.2 GHz dual core processor and Android 2.3 Gingerbread with the latest iteration of Samsung's TouchWiz i.e. the TouchWiz 4.0.

Zipmem Launched New 6, 8 GB Flash Pen Drives With Password Protection

Om Nanotech, an Indian manufacturer specialising in memory products, has launched what it claims to be the first 6 GB and 10 GB pen drives in India. Dubbed Zipmem, these drives are priced competitively at Rs 400 for the 6 GB drive and Rs 600 for the 10 GB one. Usually, flash drive capacities are powers of 2 (for example 2, 4, 8, 16, 32...), but the non-standard sizes sported by the Zipmem drives is actually a clever decision on Om Nanotech's part. It ensures that a virtually unknown player in the segment gets its own product niche devoid of any competition from the bigger players. Sizes of 6 GB and 10 GB are perfect to accommodate the 4.4 GB and 8 GB (8 GB drives have slightly less actual storage) filesizes of most standard 720p and 1080p movie rips out there.

Zipmem USB Flash Drive
Speaking about the products, Director of Om Nanotech, Atul Khosla said, "With our manufacturing plants present in India, we can make modifications in our products on the basis of consumer specific demands and requirements. This innovation is based on extensive market study and research and we hope to satisfy the requirements of our valued customers through these USB Drives". It's good to see a manufacturer catering to the value-conscious segment without making a beeline for China to source products for cheap. Whether these non-standard pen drives succeed or not, it still underscores the brand's ability to think out of the box.

The thumb drives boast a claimed read speed of 18.5 MBps and write speed of 6.5 Mbps. They can be customised with options for password protection, invisible partitions, and other security features. The Zipmems include an advanced partitioning ability incorporating two or four partitions in a single drive. The four-partition mode allows one read-only partition designated for the AutoRun feature, two read-write partitions, and one hidden partition. The two-partition mode allows segregation of partitions into public or private zones. The former can be protected by a password, and each partition and zone is custom-sizeable.

World’s Smallest 3-D Printer

Researchers at the Vienna University of Technology have developed what they claim is the world’s smallest 3-D printer. The new printer, which costs about $1,700, is smaller, cheaper and lighter than any previously made. It is the size of a milk carton and weighs 1.5 kgs. Reserachers say the new printer will provide rapid fabrication in smaller size and lower price needed by the home consumer.

“We will continue to reduce the size of the printer, and the price will definitely decrease too, if it is produced in large quantities,” said Klaus Stillmann, one of its creators.

According to the researchers, the objects are printed with a special type of resin that is light-sensitive, hardening when it is hit by a beam of intense light. Intricate designs can be built up layer by layer. This process is called additive manufacturing technology.

"As the desired parts of a layer harden, the remaining resin is irradiated and a new layer can be added. These layers are just a 20th of a millimetre thick and are printed with such precision that the machine could be used for manufacturing detailed objects such as hearing aid parts," explains Register in a report.

Amkette Launches Pearl Wireless Bluetooth Mouse

Amkette's Pearl Bluetooth Mouse has made the idea of a Bluetooth mouse affordable for the masses. The wireless device retails for Rs. 995, which is a mere Rs. 100 dearer than Amkette's non-Bluetooth alternative. This is a negligible price to pay to free up a USB slot, which would otherwise be hogged by a wireless dongle. The Pearl wireless mouse employs the 2.4 GHz interface and supports a maximum of 1600 DPI, which can be stepped down to 1200 and 800 DPI. It has a semicircular body, with an ambidextrous design sporting four buttons. The sharp-edged body doesn't look very comfortable, but we can't be too sure of that until we get our hands on one. Keep your eyes peeled for a review.

Amkette's Pearl Bluetooth mouse

In addition to compatibility with the usual Bluetooth enabled devices such as PCs, Notebooks, and Netbooks, Amkette claims that the Pearl works with tablets such as the iPad and iPad 2, as well as the iPhone 3GS. iPads generally cannot accommodate Bluetooth mice without a jailbreak, so it is interesting to see Amkette announce compatibility for the same. We have contacted the manufacturer for a confirmation, so watch this space for an update. The Pearl is backed by a warranty of three years.

Seagate Launches Slimmest Ever External HDD

Seagate GoFlex SlimStorage capacity and the physical size of storage media have always shared an inverse relation. As the drives gradually shrunk over time, storage capacity has increased nonetheless. Seagate has given its GoFlex range of portable external drives the same treatment with the new GoFlex Slim drive. The Slim GoFlex variant packs in 320GB storage capacity in a 2.5-inch form factor that's slimmed down to 9mm, which is 38% thinner than the previous GoFlex range.

You essentially get the same form factor, but in a thinner package that's easier to slip into your pockets. The secret behind GoFlex Slim's anorexia is Seagate's Momentus Thin drive, which spins at a speedy 7200RPM and features the USB 3.0 interface. The drive may be slim, but the price sure isn't. It retails at an MRP of Rs. 4,500, but a trip to your local hardware haven is recommended for the current street price.

USB tethering support allows you to use it as a modem to access the internet when you connect it to your computer or laptop. It also has GPS with AGPS to access location-based services. Since it runs Android 2.2, you can always enhance its productivity by downloading apps from the Android Market. The 1GHz Snapdragon processor makes sure that the apps won't slow down, while the 4.1 inch screen with 480x800 pixel resolution will actually allow you to view the apps in their full glory, which is usually unlikely on the smaller screens of comparatively inexpensive Android phones.

The Spice Mi 410 will come preloaded with a host of free applications, including one from Indian Railways. It will be available exclusively at Spice Hotspots across the country at Rs.15,000, which is almost twice as expensive as the Mi 310.

Osama's wife says they lived in Pakistani house for 5 years

One of Osama bin Laden's wives told Pakistani interrogators that the al Qaeda leader and his family had been living for five years in the compound where he was killed by U.S. forces this week, a security official said on Friday.
The official, who identified the woman as Amal Ahmed Abdulfattah, the youngest of bin Laden's three wives, told Reuters she was wounded in the U.S. raid on Monday.
The security official said Abdulfattah told investigators: "We have been living there for the past five years."
Both Pakistan's army and its powerful spy agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), have been facing mounting pressure to explain how it was possible for bin Laden to live deep inside Pakistan undetected for years.
Pakistani security forces took between 15 and 16 people into custody from the compound after U.S. forces removed bin Laden's body, said the security official. Those detained included bin Laden's three wives and several children.
Separately, a senior Pakistani intelligence official briefing Pakistani journalists on Thursday evening said that bin Laden and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri, fell out six years ago over the distribution of money. He gave no other details.
U.S. special forces used helicopters to attack the compound in Abbottabad, 50 km (30 miles) north of the capital, Islamabad.
Pakistani security officials say neither bin Laden nor his comrades offered any resistance during the raid.
"From the clues, evidence what we have got is they stormed in with firing shots and knocked them down," a security official said.
Another security official on Thursday said their killing was "cold-blooded".
The raid on the compound, around 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) from Pakistan's main military academy, has further strained relations between the two uneasy allies.
Pakistan's military top brass have expressed anger that the United States did not inform them of the attack beforehand.
In his first comment on the raid, Pakistan army chief General Ashfaq Kayani on Thursday threatened a review of military and intelligence cooperation should the United States repeat similar unilateral action.
He also told senior military commanders that it had been decided to reduce the strength of U.S. military personnel in Pakistan to the "minimum essential".
The army has admitted intelligence failures over the presence of bin Laden in the country and ordered an inquiry into these "shortcomings".
"We didn't know Osama bin Laden was hiding in this house until we took these people into custody and they confirmed that he (bin Laden) has been killed," another security official said.
The military, which has long been seen as the most effective institution of the unstable nation, has also been facing growing criticism at home over the perceived violation of country's sovereignty by the U.S. forces.

Al Qaeda confirms bin Laden death, vows revenge

Al Qaeda confirmed the death of Osama bin Laden on Friday in an Internet message that vowed revenge on the United States and its allies, including Pakistan, according to a statement issued by the Islamist militant group.
Five days after President Barack Obama announced bin Laden's death in a U.S. raid in Pakistan, al Qaeda confirmed the death of its leader as a historic moment, and vowed not to deviate from the path of armed struggle.
"In a historic day for the great Islamic nation... the mujahid (holy warrior) Shiekh Abu Abdullah, Osama bin Mohammed bin Laden, God have mercy on him, was killed on the path taken by those before him and will be taken by others after him."
"Congratulations to the Islamic umma (community) for the martyrdom of its son Osama."
The global militant group, which said it will soon release an audio tape made by its leader a week before he died, vowed not to deviate from the path of armed struggle and said bin Laden's blood "is more precious to us and to every Muslim than to be wasted in vain."
"It will remain, with permission from God Almighty, a curse that hunts the Americans and their collaborators and chase them outside and inside their country," the militant network said in a statement released on Islamist Internet forums.
"Their happiness will turn into sorrow, and their blood will be mixed with their tears," al Qaeda said.
"We call upon our Muslim people in Pakistan, on whose land Sheikh Osama was killed, to rise up and revolt to cleanse this shame that has been attached to them by a clique of traitors and thieves ... and in general to cleanse their country from the filth of the Americans who spread corruption in it."
The al Qaeda statement also urged the United States to treat the bodies of Osama bin Laden and those killed with him in the raid with care, and to return their bodies.
"We warn the Americans not to harm the corpse of the sheikh or expose it to any indecent treatment or to harm any members of his family, living or dead, and to deliver the corpses to their families," it said.
"Any harm done will open the doors of evil upon you doubly, and you will not have anyone but yourselves to blame."

Sony lets loose pair of Xperia Mini smartphones

Sony's gaming division may be working tirelessly to sew up the loose ends of its PlayStation Network, but Sony Ericsson, the company's smartphone branch, is having no such woes. Today they unveiled a pair of brand new Android smartphones to join the company's Xperia handset line. The Xperia Mini and Xperia Mini Pro bring a decidedly diminutive touch to Sony's handset offerings — much like the Veer has done for HP.
Both the standard Mini and Mini Pro will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread right out of the gate, a notable feature considering much of the Android market is still using version 2.2 Froyo. The phones sport 3" touch displays, 720p HD video recording capability, integrated Facebook features, and Sony's DLNA connection technology that allows users to toss media from the phone to compatible Bravia TVs.
The Pro model ups the ante and adds slide-out "Smart Keyboard" which automatically predicts what you want to use it for. For example, if you're surfing the web and slide open the keyboard the cursor automatically jumps to the search or address bar. No word on a specific launch date was given, but Sony expects to release the new pair in the fall.

Nokia Makes Smartphone Connection to Microsoft

Nokia, thе world’s bіggеѕt standalone mobile-phone company, hаѕ finally signed a deal wіth Microsoft worth billions οf dollars whісh іt hopes wіll hеlр tο reverse іtѕ falling share οf thе fаѕt-growing аnd lucrative smartphone market.
Thе announcement οf іtѕ рlаn tο shift over tο thе software company’s Windows Phone platform fοr іtѕ top-еnd smartphones came аѕ thе Finnish company set out quarterly financial results whісh ѕhοwеd continuing pressure οn both іtѕ smartphone аnd standard mobile-phone products. Profits іn thе mobile division wеrе down 17% year-οn-year tο €690m (£607) οn revenues up 6% tο €7.1bn, аnd overall profit down 10% tο €439m οn total revenues οf €10.4bn, up 9%.
Although thе figures wеrе better thаn expected, thеу still contrasted poorly wіth Apple’s spectacular results οn Wednesday night, whісh ѕhοwеd іtѕ total phone revenues wеrе $12.3bn, mаkіng thе iPhone manufacturer thе world’s lаrgеѕt phone maker іn sheer revenue terms.
Nokia still sells thе mοѕt handsets – 108.5m іn thе quarter – bυt even thаt number wаѕ level wіth a year ago, indicating thаt thе company іѕ having trουblе expanding іtѕ business quickly іn markets such аѕ China, India аnd Latin America, whеrе іt hаѕ identified thе bіggеѕt potential fοr growth.
Apple hаѕ аlѕο creamed οff thе mοѕt valuable smartphone users, wіth average selling prices οn іtѕ handsets οf $660 (£400) іn thе latest quarter compared wіth €147 (£130) fοr Nokia’s smartphones. Average prices fοr іtѕ phones overall hаνе continued tο drop over thе past four years even whіlе іtѕ phone volumes hаνе remained largely static.
Nokia plans tο abandon thе Symbian platform currently used οn іtѕ smartphones bу thе middle οf next year аnd adopt Microsoft’s Windows Phone bесаυѕе chief executive Stephen Elop – a former Microsoft executive – believes thаt іt offers thе best hope οf building a sustainable platform іn thе fаѕt-growing market. Hе called thе deal “a win-win partnership” bесаυѕе οf thе complementary nature οf thе companies’ assets.
Thе two companies announced thе outline fοr thе deal іn London іn February, аftеr Elop hаd courted both Google аnd Microsoft, choosing between thе Android mobile operating system – now thе world’s mοѕt-used οn smartphones – аnd Windows Phone, whісh wаѕ οnlу introduced іn October 2010 аnd hаѕ hаd a lukewarm reception frοm customers.
Nokia shares rose 3% οn news οf thе deal аnd thе results, whісh wеrе less bаd thаn analysts hаd feared. Bυt Elop’s guidance fοr thе forthcoming quarter indicated thаt thе company hаѕ bееn hit bу supply chain problems caused bу thе earthquake аnd tsunami іn Japan. “Wе expect a more challenging second quarter,” hе ѕаіd, forecasting “greater impact” frοm thе earthquake’s effects thаn іn thе јυѕt-еndеd quarter.
Elop іѕ expected tο сυt a swath through Nokia’s staff following thе Microsoft deal, whісh wіll remove thе need fοr a lot οf іn-house software development. Hе ѕаіd thе company expects tο save аbουt €1bn bу 2013 through reduced headcount. Thе mονе hаѕ bееn unpopular within Finland, whеrе Nokia hаѕ аbουt 130,000 employees.
Richard Windsor, global technology specialist аt Nomura, ѕаіd: “It’s a bit οf a nο-score draw really. Yου′ve gοt a solid set οf numbers, bυt guidance іѕ bаd. Bυt іt’s nοt thе cataclysm thаt hаd bееn feared. Wе wеrе worried thеу mіght miss second-quarter revenue bу 10-15% bесаυѕе wе′d heard numbers out οf Asia wеrе bаd.”
Geoff Blaber, analyst аt CCS Insight, ѕаіd: “Performance wаѕ largely consistent wіth expectations аnd thеrе wіll bе a sigh οf relief thаt thеrе appeared tο bе nο considerable downturn аt thе low-еnd tο compound Nokia’s difficulties іn thе high-tier. Finalisation οf thе agreement wіth Microsoft means Nokia саn now focus οn execution.”
