Microsoft Launches New Surface Tablets With Windows 8

In a watershed moment for Microsoft, the company announced that it’s launching its own brand of tablets to go head to head with the Apple iPad and the myriad of Android tablets.
Unveiled at an event in Los Angeles hosted by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, the new Windows 8-based Microsoft Surface tablets are designed for work and play and will come in two models: A Windows 8 RT version and a Windows 8 Pro model.
The consumer-focused Windows 8 RT Surface is the first PC with a VaporMg magnesium case and measures only 0.37 inch thick — just enough space to fit in a full-size USB 2.0 port. The tablet weighs 1.49 pounds and offers beveled edges for a more comfortable fit in the hand, as well as a built-in kick stand.
The Surface features a custom-designed 10.6-inch widescreen HD display with Gorilla Glass, but Microsoft did not mention its specific resolution today. In addition, the tablet comes with a magnetic cover made from “fine Northwest polar-tec” that incorporates a full multi-touch keyboard and trackpad. Microsoft said the keyboard is twice as efficient as typing on glass and only adds about 0.11 inch of additional thickness.
By comparison, the latest Wi-Fi-only iPad measures 0.37-inch thick and weighs 1.46 pounds.
The Windows 8 RT Surface tablet is equipped with Nvidia’s ARM-based chipset and comes preloaded with Office Home & Student 2013 RT. The tablet will be available in 32 gigabyte and 64GB models. Other features include dual multiple-in, multiple-out (MIMO) Wi-Fi antennas for the best Wi-Fi coverage of any tablet, a built-in camera, dual-array microphones and HDMI port.
For those seeking more power, Microsoft will also release a Surface for Windows 8 Pro tablet.
The Pro tablet uses Intel’s latest Ivy Bridge Core i5 processors and according to Microsoft, can handle everything a desktop can do with USB 3.0 and USB Super Speed support. To cool the machine, the tablet uses something called “peripheral venting” to allow hot air to escape.
The Surface for Windows Pro 8 shares the same design principles as the RT Surface but is a bit thicker at 0.55 inches and weighs less than two pounds. It also has a 10.6-inch touchscreen but it supports pen input and digital ink, so you can use a stylus to mark up documents and jot down notes.
The Surface for Windows 8 Pro will be offered in 64GB and 128GB capacities, and a Surface Type cover with physical keys instead of a multitouch keyboard will also be available. The latter is also compatible with the Windows RT model.
Such details as battery life, memory and processor speed were not revealed at this time. Microsoft also did not announce pricing or availability but said that the Surface for Windows RT will be priced similar to ARM-based tablets and come out around the same time Windows 8 hits the market later this year.
The Windows 8 Pro Surface’s pricing will fall more in line with Ultrabooks and will launch three months after the Windows RT Surface. Both tablets will initially be sold through its retail and online stores.

Microsoft Windows 8 coming on October 26

Microsoft announced that its next-generation operating system tailored for a world shifting from personal computers to smartphones and tablets will be available on October 26.

Windows unit boss Steven Sinofsky revealed theWindows 8 debut date at a sales meeting, Microsoft communications manager Brandon LeBlanc said in a blog post yesterday.

Windows 8 will be available in 109 languages across 231 markets worldwide, according to LeBlanc.

Microsoft has promised to make the new operating system available in August for computer, tablet or smartphone makers to build into hardware. It "is simply the biggest deal for this company in at least 17 years," Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer said last week, referring to the time since the launch of the game-changing Windows 95 operating system

"It's the glue; it's the foundation of everything Microsoft is built on."

Microsoft reported that it has sold more than 630 million licenses of Windows 7, and that the software powers the majority of business desktop computers.

Windows 7 went public in October 2009. The latest version of the operating system that is the norm for personal computers will also be used on many smartphones and tablet computers, including Microsoft's own Surface tablet to be launched this year.

The Redmond, Washington-based firm has gone on record stating that Surface tablets would hit the market when the Windows 8 operating system became publicly available. Windows 8 allows users readily to store and share personal data among various devices under the "SkyDrive" cloud computing service.

Rivals Apple and Google offer such services, which let people store digital data on servers in the Internet "cloud" and access files from devices of their choosing.

The new Microsoft system will support a wider range of devices, including touch and stylus-based smartphones and tablet PCs as well as desktop and laptop machines. Versions of Windows 8 have been tailored for chips used to power various mobile devices.

The software giant has been trying to expand its presence in the booming market for smartphones and tablets, which is currently dominated by Apple and Google.

iPhone 5 coming on August 7

Apple's next-generation iPhone popularly being referred to as iPhone 5 is launching on August 7, claims a blog on Know Your Mobile website. The website makes this claim citing "a reliable industry source" who, it says, has stated that the Cupertino-based tech giant will launch the device during a keynote speech.

Earlier, the same website had reported that the launch date of iPhone 5 has been pushed ahead to August in order to compete better againstSamsung Galaxy S III.

There have been many rumours and leaks about the device. The latest post by Know Your Mobile has pegged the launch date for the much anticipated smartphone at least 3 months ahead of the day when iPhone 4S was unveiled.

Moreover, this launch date will be ahead of the scheduled roll out of iOS 6, which is said to be launched this September. It is anticipated that the upcoming iPhone will be shipped with the latest version of Apple's operating system.

Google Nexus 7 tablet goes on sale in US

Google Nexus 7 tablet is off to an encouraging start, with major retailers running out of the gadgets as the internet company's first entry in an increasingly crowded market showed up in US stores on Friday.

GameStop said on Friday it had already run through its first two allocations of the tablet, co-developed by Google and Taiwan's Asustek that starts at $199 and has drawn glowing reviews from major gadget reviewers.

Sam's Club, the warehouse chain owned by Wal-Mart Stores, and Staples listed the device as being out of stock on their websites as of Friday. Office Depot's website continued to offer the device for sale as of the afternoon.

Google unveiled the 7-inch tablet, which the company hopes will allow it to better compete against Apple and Amazon.com and funnel more people into its trove of online content, at its annual developer conference in San Francisco at the end of June.

Consumers have been able to pre-order the tablet from Google and several retailers in past weeks, and Google said it began shipping devices to consumers on Friday.

"We blew through the first two allotments," a GameStop spokesperson said.

A third allotment of preorders will be available in August. The game retailer declined to share exact number of preorders.

The Nexus 7 uses Google's Android mobile software, which has become the most prevalent operating system for smartphones globally, but has so far failed to make a big splash in the tablet market.

By taking a greater role in the tablet arena, Google hopes to ensure that its online services remain front-and-center to consumers, as tablets by Apple and Amazon are increasingly becoming gateways to the Web and Web-based content such as movies and music.

Google executives have been quoted saying that the company will not generate a profit margin when the Nexus 7 is sold in retail stores. A report by research firm IHS iSuppli on Wednesday estimated that the bill of materials for the $199 version of the device, which features 8GB of flash memory and a high-end Tegra 3 processor by Nvidia, is $152.

Apple still dominates the market for touch-screen tablet computers with its two-year old iPad. Amazon.com's $199 Kindle Fire tablet is based on open-source Android computer code, but the device features a customized interface that does not use many Google services.

The Nexus 7 has drawn accolades from reviewers like the Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg. Pundits reckon the $199 Nexus 7 may seriously threaten the same-priced Kindle Fire, especially since Google's offering has a camera and a higher-resolution screen.

Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt, speaking to reporters on Thursday at the Allen & Co conference in Sun Valley, said there was "immense demand" for the Nexus 7 in the first week after it was introduced.

Google’s Nexus tablet to be launch in India in October 2012

Nexus 7, the tablet made by Google in partnership with Asus, will launch in India in October this year. The 7-inch tablet is first Nexus branded tablet and hence runs Google's unmodifiedAndroid operating software. It was announced at Google I/O on June 27.
The model with 8GB internal storage is priced at $199. It will be available in the US and three other countries in the coming weeks. The one with 16GB has been priced at $249.
The Nexus 7 announced by Google is powered by a quad-core 1.3Ghz processor. It has 1GB RAM and a 1.2MP front camera. The device runs on Jelly Bean, the latest version of Android that was also announced at Google I/O.
Many companies, including Samsung and Asus, are selling Android tablets since the beginning of 2011 but they have not made much headway against iPad, which continues to be wildly popular with consumers. Google hopes that with its own tablet, it will be able to entice consumers better. Also, the company believes that the Nexus tablet in the market will prompt app developers to write more tablet-specific apps for Android.
Nexus devices are Google branded products. Unlike a customized users interface that Samsung and HTC put in their Android devices, Nexus devices are powered by 'pure' Android and receive updates as soon as Google pushes them out. This makes these devices particularly attractive to power users, who don't want to wait to get latest software updates.
Even though Nexus products are considered to be Google's own devices, their launch is handled by the hardware partner. This means that Google has little say in whether a Nexus product will get launched in India or not. For example, Galaxy Nexus, which is Google's flagship phone, has not been launched in India by Samsung even though it went on sale in several countries last year.
With Nexus 7, Google is not only attempting to take on the iPad but also aiming for Kindle Fire, a 7-inch tablet made by Amazon. In India, Kindle Fire is not sold officially. But there are other 7-inch tablets that may feel the heat once Google's tablet hits the market here.

Microsoft Expected to Unveil Office 15

Microsoft is expected to show off Office 15, the next version of the company's productivity suite, on Monday at an event in San Francisco, according to numerous reports.
Office has been available to a select group of users in a technical preview since January. It's not clear whether a public beta of Office might be available Monday, or whether it will arrive later this summer.
Few details have seeped out about Office 15. Several reports claim Windows XP and Windows Vista won't be able to run Office 15. Microsoft is scheduled to stop supporting XP in 2014 and Vista support is expected to run out in 2017.
If XP and Vista won't run the new Office, that leaves only Windows 7 and 8 PCs to run Microsoft's newest productivity suite. Of course, rumors persist that Microsoft will bring Office to the iPad with native Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps. Microsoft in late 2011 released OneNote for the iPad.
Nor has Microsoft said whether it will offer a touch-only Metro version of Office on Windows 8, the next version of the operating system, scheduled for release in October. So far, only desktop UI versions of Office 15 have surfaced online. Microsoft is building Office 15 into Windows RT (the version of Windows 8 for ARM slates), but it too will feature the desktop versions.

What We Know About Office 15

Based on leaks from the Technical Preview, it appears Metro, the main design language for Windows 8 and Windows Phone, will figure prominently in the look and feel of Office 15.
Source: Supersite for Windows
This includes bold, basic colors, and square edges. Office's famous Ribbon UI will reportedly be hidden by default, giving Office 15 a more stripped-down and basic look.
The new version of Office will also feature integration with cloud services such as Facebook, Flickr, Hotmail, and SkyDrive. Microsoft is reportedly preparing an Office Marketplace for extensions and tools, and Office 15 will also feature a touch-optimized mode for tablets and all-in-one touchscreens.

SEAGATE REINVENTS BACKUP FOR YOUR DIGITAL LIFE New Consumer Storage First to Offer Saving and Sharing of Facebook and Flickr Photo/Video Albums

Seagate Technology plc (NASDAQ: STX) today introduced Backup Plus storage devices – its reinvented consumer storage product family that delivers the easiest setup, one-click backup and the ability to save and share your content on Facebook and Flickr.

Seagate® Backup Plus hard drives are newly designed external storage that work interchangeably with both Windows® and Apple® computers and deliver new features to protect, share and save nearly every aspect of one’s digital life. These products come loaded with the new hassle-free Seagate Dashboard software for one-click local backup making it easier than ever to eliminate excuses or apprehensions about backing up one’s most valuable digital content. Seagate Backup Plus products are the world’s first external hard drives to provide backup for content on social networks, such as Facebook and Flickr. Storing a local duplicate copy of photos from social networks is now as easy as backing up files on your computer. Seagate Backup Plus will provide the peace of mind that every aspect of one’s digital life is safe from loss.

Backing up data is an absolute necessity that many people put off until after it’s too late. According to a 2011 study by Parks Associates less than one-quarter of the households in the survey have a weekly backup plan for their systems and only 4% are diligent enough to manually perform a backup on a daily basis.[i]

“The idea of providing a backup of photos and videos from Facebook is an interesting one, which I believe may help people come to realize the importance of maintaining multiple copies of any digital asset regardless of where it is stored,” said Brett Sappington, director of research for Parks Associates. “Social media has become a massive repository for personal digital content, and most consumers have not likely considered the possibility of losing access to those shared memories.”

Seagate Backup Plus hard drives featuring the new Seagate Dashboard backup software remove the barriers to performing backup and content preservation by making it as easy as possible. With just a click of an icon, computer.

files are replicated onto a Backup Plus drive. The Seagate Dashboard included on Backup Plus also provides a single click path toSave (download) and Share (upload) personal photos and videos on Facebook and Flickr.
According to a recent survey commissioned by Seagate and conducted online by Harris Interactive from May 22-24, 2012, more than half (54%) of U.S. adults personally have and/or know someone who has lost files. Over one-quarter (27%) of U.S. adults personally have lost files and found that it was upsetting for them. While almost all (97%) of those surveyed were identified as computer owners; only 11% have a continuous backup plan and only 10% have a daily backup plan.[ii]

“Backing up needs to be an essential part of everyone’s digital life. Nearly everything that is dear to us is now in a digital format; from tax documents, to emails, to family photos and video, many of these files can not be recreated in the event of an accidental loss or system failure,” said BanSeng Teh, senior vice president and managing director, Asia Pacific and Japan. “Seagate is in the business of keeping digital content and files protected in every aspect, whether it is in the cloud, stored on PC or with our external consumer products. Backup Plus is a product that eliminates the barriers to protecting these digital assets. The new Dashboard delivers a simple and complete backup experience with the added benefit of saving photos and video stored on Facebook and other social networks.”

A Versatile Storage Device
In 2010, Seagate adopted the Universal Storage Module (USM®) standard, which enables consumers to easily add the newest Mac® and PC connection capabilities to their Seagate storage product even if these technologies are introduced later. To add yet another level of versatility, Seagate has introduced a way to have the company’s external storage products work cross-platform with both Mac® and Windows® operating systems without reformatting.

Seagate Backup Plus Storage
Available immediately through select retailers and resellers in India, Seagate Backup Plus drives will initially be available in capacities of 500GB and 1TB capacities for portable drives and 2TB and 3TB for Backup Plus Desk drives.
